Preface

The messages contained in this book are just as I delivered them from the pulpit of the Woodlawn Terrace Baptist Church of which I am pastor, having been stenographically recorded. I must pay tribute to whom tribute is due, and that is Mrs. Helen Jacks, who at great cost to herself, both physically and financially, recorded these messages. Mrs. Jacks was so eager for others to read what she had been hearing for many years that she took a course in shorthand in order that she might be able to record these messages. Both she and her husband are great souls. They love the truth, and desire that others have the opportunity to at least read the truth, for they realize that it is the truth that sets men free (John 8:32).

I do not claim originality for all my thoughts contained in these sermons, because across the years I have read after great men of God and have been privileged to hear many great preachers of the Word of God. Therefore, I gathered many of my thoughts from many sources and from many men, and to those men whom I have heard, and from whose messages I have gotten seed thoughts, I say, "Thanks."

This book is being sent out in the interest of truth and souls. If just one soul is saved as a result of this book, then I shall know that my labor was not in vain; or if someone who is a Christian and has been in doctrinal error, is brought out of error to the embracing of the truth, then I shall say that it was well worth every effort that has been put forth in getting this book into the hands of the public.

There is no doubt that you will find many mistakes in this book, but I assure you that they are mistakes of the head and not of the heart.

I must pay tribute to the Woodlawn Terrace Baptist Church. Had it not been for them, this book would not have been published; but this church has been, and is, faithful to the Truth. There is no church anywhere that loves truth more than this church, and they desire that truth shall ever march forward, and they have proven this fact by making this book possible. I have been pastor of the Woodlawn Terrace Baptist Church for the past nine years, and I can truthfully say that they have been the most pleasant years that I have ever experienced in a pastorate.

This church is a great church—a church that loves the truth, and desires that the world hear the truth. They are missionary-minded, spending many thousands of dollars every year in sending the Gospel to a lost and dying world. They are supporting missionaries in many foreign lands and at home also.

The Woodlawn Terrace Baptist Church wants the world to hear the Baptist message, which is, the simple Gospel story of the Lord Jesus Christ and His power to save.

Many of you that read this book know the author personally and have heard Him preach. Therefore, you will be able to catch the spirit of these messages more readily.

I trust that this book will meet with approbation, and that countless thousands will be blessed in the reading of these messages contained herein, equally as much as the author was blessed in the delivering of them.

My prayer is that this work will redound to the glory of God, and to the exaltation of the wondrous name of our Blessed Kinsman Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ.
